ABSTRACT

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study enterprise innovation in the perspective of external supplier relationship. On this purpose, this paper examines the impact of supplier change on enterprise innovation with the moderating role of market competition.Design/methodology/approachUsing 2012–2020 empirical data of Chinese listed manufacturing enterprises, this paper investigates the relationship among supplier change, market competition and enterprise innovation through a two-way interaction model.FindingsThe results show that supplier change has a negative impact on enterprise innovation. And market competition intensifies the negative relationship between supplier change and enterprise innovation. Additional analyses indicate that the main effect and the moderating effect are more significant when the enterprise is non-state-owned or has lower ownership concentration.Originality/valueThis paper studies enterprise innovation from the perspective of external stakeholders. It focuses on supplier relationship in a dynamic variation view, instead of the traditional static ones. Moreover, this paper explores the contingency effect of market competition and gives practical implications for managers to adjust innovation strategy flexibly.

ABSTRACT

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the scope and market size of flexible employment in sustainable enterprise development have significantly increased worldwide, yet academic literature offer little information about the outcomes and moderators of flexible employment in China. The paper advances current knowledge and empirically addresses this gap by examining the effects of flexible employment on enterprise innovation input and output, with information technology capability and labor regulation as unexplored moderators. Based on data from 1179 manufacturing enterprises in China, this paper uses the OLS method to conduct empirical tests. The results show that (1) flexible employment has positively contributed to sustainable enterprise development by facilitating innovation inputs and outputs;(2) superior enterprise information technology capabilities and strict labor regulations were significant moderating factors in this relationship. The findings provide credible evidence for enterprises to pursue flexible employment as an inexhaustible impetus for sustainable economic and enterprise development.

ABSTRACT

PurposeInnovation for service contributes to service quality and customer satisfaction, and further benefits service-centered organizations to sustain competitive advantages. However, concurrent mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying innovation for service at both the group and individual levels have been scarcely investigated. The purpose of this study is to explore multilevel mediating and moderating mechanisms behind the relationship between dual-level transformational leadership (TFL) and innovation for service at the group and individual levels.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from two countries (i.e. China and Australia). Multilevel structural equation modeling was employed to validate the research model. Bootstrapping with 5,000 replications and latent moderated structural equation modeling were used to respectively examine the mediating and moderating mechanisms.FindingsThe cross-national results showed that task interdependence and creative role identity respectively played as the group-level and individual-level mediating roles between TFL and innovation for service. It was also found that task interdependence played as a cross-level predictor enhancing individual innovation for service. Task interdependence was a moderator on the relationship between individual-level TFL and creative role identity among Australian employees, but not among Chinese employees. The relationship between creative role identity and individual innovation for service was not moderated by task interdependence among both Chinese and Australian employees.Originality/valueThis study contributes to advancing the TFL–innovation research through revealing dual-level TFL as the antecedent of innovation for service at both the group and individual levels. It also extends the understandings of the mediating and moderating mechanisms behind this dual-level relationship between TFL and innovation for service.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the impact of environmental scanning on organizational resilience through the mediation of organizational learning and innovation based on organizational information processing theory (OIPT) within Egyptian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a cross-sectional design to collect the data used to carry out mediation analysis. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample consisting of 249 Egyptian SMEs. The smart partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was adopted to test the hypotheses.FindingsEnvironmental scanning does not have a direct effect on organizational resilience. However, organizational learning and innovation fully mediate the relationship between environmental scanning and organizational resilience.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample size was small, covering only Egyptian manufacturing SMEs. The results may differ in the service sector and other countries. The study was cross-sectional which is limited to tracing the long-term effects of environmental scanning, organizational learning and innovation on organizational resilience. Accordingly, a longitudinal study may be undertaken.Practical implicationsManagers in Egyptian SMEs should use signals from environmental scanning activities as input for learning and transforming business processes through innovation to develop organizational resilience.Originality/valueThis study is the first to investigate the role of environmental scanning in building organizational resilience through organizational learning and innovation based on the perspective of OIPT within Egyptian SMEs during the COVID-19 crisis.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study analyzes in-depth how knowledge-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can achieve higher new product development (NPD) process performance in the epidemic era and examine the internal development mechanism of knowledge-intensive SMEs in the process of continuous digital transformation.Design/methodology/approachThis issue is tested with partial least squares on data collected via a survey conducted from November 2021 to February 2022. The sample comprises 487 knowledge-intensive SMEs operating in China.FindingsThe results indicate that one form of cross-functional ambidexterity, market development strategy (MDS), plays an important role in process performance from an inside-out financial perspective and an outside-in customer perspective. Simultaneously, product innovation efficiency (PIE) mediates the relationship between MDS and the above results. Big data analytics capabilities (BDACs) positively regulate the relationship between MDS and PIE.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors do not consider other contingency factors. Future research should introduce influential factors such as leadership and competitive intensity to further distinguish the effects of MDS on NPD process performance.Practical implicationsThe study findings offer suggestions to help knowledge-intensive SME managers better manage their NPD process by making better use of their limited resources in developing countries such as China.Originality/valueThis study is one of only a few to adopt a process-oriented perspective to specifically examine how one form of cross-functional ambidexterity, MDS, impacts knowledge-intensive SME process performance in the epidemic era. This study also extends the theoretical framework of cross-functional ambidexterity to BDAC research.

ABSTRACT

Education officials have long hoped that the statewide academic assessments most students take each year could be used not only for accountability but also to guide instruction. Congress established the Innovative Assessment Demonstration Authority (IADA) program in 2015 to help address this goal, offering up to seven states temporary flexibility from federal testing requirements so that they may more easily make progress toward replacing their current assessments with more innovative ones. The key incentive to participate in IADA is that students trying out the innovative assessment are not required to also take the state's current assessment. However, states approved for IADA must still show that their innovative assessments meet most requirements for federal accountability, and they are expected to implement the new assessments statewide within 5 years. This report describes the progress of the first five assessment systems approved under IADA in order to help policymakers consider expanding the program to more states. The report is primarily based on an analysis of states' IADA applications and performance reports to the U.S. Department of Education through the 2020-2021 school year and is part of a broader evaluation of IADA required by Congress. ABSTRACT

Evaluation and selection of eco-innovation strategies is a significant and complex strategic decision, and despite the relevance and interest in the field of eco-innovation, the area of eco-innovation strategies has not been explored in depth in the scientific literature. Therefore, in this study, we propose an integrated approach to evaluating eco-innovation strategies from the perspective of strategic green transformation that helps decision-makers evaluate and select eco-innovation strategy aiming to achieve a competitive advantage. For this study, we adopted a validated multi-criteria decision-making methodology (MCDM) by combining Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The reliability of the proposed framework was tested and applied in the context of the Lithuanian furniture industry. This study offers three contributions and provides a comprehensive and profound insights into eco-innovation strategies. First, this study conceptualizes eco-innovation strategy from the perspective of strategic green transformation and proposed a novel definition and classification of eco-innovation strategies leading to competitive advantage. Second, this study proposes a novel approach to the evaluation of eco-innovation strategies taking into account micro-, meso-, and macro-level environmental factors. Third, the findings of this study provide implications for scholars and decision-makers in the field of eco-innovation strategy and set an agenda for future research.

ABSTRACT

The usual crisis mode of economic operations in Palestine intersects with the adverse consequences of COVID-19 and necessitates an innovative response to survive. This research builds on potential synergies between industry and university to expand the Palestinian agriculture sector resilience. We report on an explorative study that sought to understand the reality of the university–industry linkages (UILs) by considering information and experience gathered from 29 interviews in January 2020 and April 2021. Interviewees represent five key actor groups: farmers and agribusinesses, private institutions, universities, the Ministry of Agriculture, and NGOs. Content analysis revealed a nascent collaboration scope and uncovered the lack of a confident attitude among farmers towards agriculture research efforts, the poor communication performance, and misalignment of purpose. University actors need to encompass the UILs in their mission and touch farmers' needs by providing novelty evidence research. Yet, farmers and agribusinesses may take the initiative to communicate their problems and search for renovation. We developed a framework of underpinnings to enhance collaboration and a healthier agriculture sector. We suggest activating the cooperatives and diversifying farmers' income as deemed more resilient to face the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Besides the widespread harm and dreadful impact COVID-19 has caused, it brought about change. Interpreting the pandemic as a 'change agent', it is possible to observe how it accelerated the use of digital technologies, facilitating the migration of many activities to the virtual sphere and thus changing the interaction between the physical and virtual worlds. Although the pandemic accelerated the diffusion and adoption of digital technologies, allowing many to avoid or reduce the harms caused by the pandemic, not everyone benefitted to the same extent. The pandemic exacerbated existing digital divides while creating new ones, simultaneously elevating important policy debates regarding digital infrastructure and inclusion policies. © 2023 the authors.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this article is to present an analysis of the process of reflection-action of teachers in the context of the SarsCov 2 pandemic and, to this end, we compare some educational policies and practices of teacher training developed in the Faculty of Education and other spaces of the Fluminense Federal University. We conduct research in action and about action, experiencing intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogues to understand, produce and intervene in university educational culture. The debate led us to collectively define democratic, innovative, intercultural and interdisciplinary strategies. The analysis of the conjuncture and the didactic-methodological resizing demanded, predominantly virtual, made us conclude that between crossings, the construction of intersubjective actions boosted instituting and insurgent actions in the face of the tensions of a time of human suffering that required us to build strategies to, in this collective action, celebrate and value life. For writing, we adopted a descriptive-analytical perspective, historicizing some of the processes ofparticipatory and dialogical self-organization.

ABSTRACT

Modern-day tourism festivals in Asia have greatly embraced technology to boost festival quality, attendee's experience and marketing potential. With this development, technology enhances tourism festival demand, innovation, and attendance. This in turn boosts the market value since it creates a modernized, industrialized, and commercialized industry that can compete favorably on the global tourism market. Although the application of advanced technology particularly in festivals has been anticipated to be associated with several technical challenges, financial and human resource constraints, it is important to note that if appropriate and acceptable models are identified and factors that influence technological applied, a long-lasting impression on the minds of the festival visitors can be created. This study was done to both offer a theoretical overview of the application of technologies in tourism festivals and to inform development of strategy in the Asian tourism festival industry. Effective integration of innovative digital technologies in tourism festivals in Asia is anticipated to create a unique leisure experience, particularly in a unique form of festivals known as ‘Smart Tourism Festivals'. Besides sustainability, these highly impact on the key experience outcomes such as satisfaction and memorability of the festival attendees. The COVID-19 pandemic has given momentum to the current technological application processes in various film, music, culture, sport, art and other related carnivals and festivals in the tourism industry especially amongst the leading Asian economies such as China, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, India, Singapore, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Thailand among others. This paper uses existing studies to provide a theoretical discussion of tourism festivals in the Asian context, areas of impact of digital technologies on festivals, emergence of smart tourism festivals, the underlying challenges and opportunities. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2022.

ABSTRACT

Characterizing food systems, i.e., describing their organizational features, can help to generate a better understanding of the structural vulnerabilities that constrain transitions towards sustainable food security. However, their characterization across different economic contexts remains challenging. In this paper, by linking key concepts from research on food regimes, food system vulnerabilities and responsible innovation, we aim to characterize food systems in a developing and a developed economy to identify their shared vulnerabilities. We applied a case study design to characterize food production, processing and distribution in the province of Québec (Canada) and in the state of São Paulo (Brazil). In both cases, the processing and distribution stages have higher economic predominance when compared to the agricultural production stage. Furthermore, we observed concentration in a few activities in both food systems, with a shared focus on export-oriented supply chains. Vulnerabilities in both food systems include: (1) increased interdependence because some supply chains are export-oriented or depend on foreign labor and are, therefore, exposed to external risks;(2) concentration in a few activities, which threatens present and future local food diversity and (3) unequal power relations, making small and medium players vulnerable to decisions made by big players. The characterization developed in this study shows that the two food systems are mainly pursuing economic goals, following the institutional logics of the neoliberal food regime, which are not necessarily aligned with food security goals. It also exposes the presence of characteristics of ‘responsibility' that may eventually help overcome food systems' vulnerabilities and support transitions toward sustainability.

ABSTRACT

The Moroccan cooperative sector is increasingly important, not only in the social and economic fabric of Morocco, but also in the sustainable development of the Kingdom. With the advent of COVID, the cooperative sector offers more inclusive and sustainable economic alternatives than ever before. In this context, organizational resilience is essential to preserve the sustainability of cooperatives and anticipate potential crises. This study addresses the following issue: What are the organizational factors necessary to strengthen the organizational resilience of the Moroccan cooperative in the Fez-Meknes region in times of COVID-19 crisis? The purpose of this paper was to test the hypothesized relationships between a set of latent constructs (actor involvement and mobilization, organizational learning in times of a crisis and social innovation) and the organizational resilience of cooperatives in times of a COVID-19 crisis. The methodology adopted is structural equation modeling based on the PLS-SEM method under the "SmartPLS Version 3” used on data collected through a printed questionnaire administered to 160 cooperatives in the Fez-Meknes region. The results show the significant and positive influence between the exogenous constructs on the strengthening of organizational resilience of cooperatives as an endogenous construct. The novelty of the study lies in the identification of the organizational resources needed to strengthen the organizational resilience of cooperatives in the Moroccan context. The results show that organizational resilience depends on three selected organizational factors: stakeholder involvement and mobilization, organizational learning in the times of a crisis and social innovation.

ABSTRACT

The Philippine IT-business process management industry is in transition. Today, as the global outsourcing industry finds itself at the center of a more digitally integrated world in response to the disruption caused by COVID-19, it is also pushing the Philippines to shift to high-skilled, knowledge-based services in order to stay ahead of the competition. The chapter focuses on the rising contribution of manufacturing services to the country's services export growth. The present study examines this trend from policymakers' and other stakeholders' perspectives and asks: What will it take for the domestic industry to climb up the value chain? More strategically, will this emerging trend help pave the way for the country to build its own manufacturing base and thus effect structural transformation? The study has two preliminary findings. First, increase in IT-BPM investments in the post-pandemic transition coincide with a growing interest in manufacturing services, including engineering design and data analytics. Second, the country seeks to leverage its leading global industry position and large high-skilled pool in order to stay ahead of other rising destinations. Nevertheless, for the Philippines to transition to complex and technology-intensive services it will need to gear up human resources and digital infrastructure, and ensure a robust university-industry interface—two prerequisites for the country's own push toward industrial development. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between innovation and performance in culinary sector MSME in Indonesia. This research also examines the mediating role of competitive strategies on the correlation of innovation in SME performance. This study proceeds using a quantitative approach and Partial Least Square (PLS) through SmartPLS software. The sample of this study consisted of 201 SMEs in Indonesia (specially in Surabaya) that engage in the food and beverage (culinary) sector, and the researcher used an accidental sampling technique to collect data. The result revealed that process innovation was directly, positively, and significantly related to the performance of SMEs. Further-more, the analysis found that competitive strategies, including cost leadership, differentiation, and focus, mediated a partial relationship between innovation and SME performance and had a full mediation of innovation in SME performance. This study shows that SMEs with process innovation can more easily achieve superior performance than SMEs which imple-ment product-oriented innovation. This research focused on SMEs in Surabaya, so it is necessary to be careful in general-izing the results to other locations or business sectors. © 2023 The Author(s). ABSTRACT

Big data has now become a hot topic and focus of common concern in academia and practitioners. Data collection, storage, analysis, and processing require enterprises to improve their big data capability (BDC), which are increasingly valued by companies to create greater value. Supply chain collaborative innovation (SCCI) can enable companies to improve products and services. Many scholars have realized the positive effect of BDC on the improvement of enterprise performance, however, most of the extant literature focuses on direct effects of BDC on enterprise performance, and there is a lack of analysis of its impact transmission process. From the perspective of SCCI, and based on the theory of resource-based view (RBV) and theory of dual innovation (DI), this research analyzes the intermediary effect of SCCI as a complementary asset between BDC and enterprise operational performance (EOP), and reveals that BDC affect EOP by way of impact transmission mechanism. All the relationships between the three constructs (BDC, SCCI and EOP) are investigated by the empirical study. Subject to systematical review of existing literature from both China and overseas countries, and based on the theory of RBV, this paper categorizes BDC into three sub-capabilities: big data resource integration (BDRI), big data in-depth analysis (BDIDA) and big data application (BDA);based on the theory of dual innovation, SCCI is divided into two variables: breakthrough innovation (BI) and gradual innovation (GI). A theoretical framework is then developed and three research hypotheses are proposed accordingly: H1. Big data capabilities have a positive effect on supply chain collaborative innovation;H2. Supply chain collaborative innovation has a positive effect on enterprise operational performance;H3. Supply chain collaborative innovation plays a mediating role in the relationship between big data capabilities and enterprise operational performance. Empirical research methods using a large-scale questionnaire collection and analysis of primary data are employed to test whether the research hypothesis are accepted or rejected, and conclusions are drawn subsequently. The research employs questionnaire survey to collect data from Chinese manufacturers in the automotive and electronics sectors as these two sectors are ideal to investigate the impact transmission mechanism between big data capability and enterprise operational performance, as they have relatively good understanding and high level of informatization with good BDC. Sample enterprises are located in both coastal provinces and inland areas. The questionnaire was designed subject to both intensive and extensive literature review. The data collection started in early May 2020 and ended in November 2020. Due to Covid-19, most of the questionnaires were collected by emails or Questionnaire Star. A total of 330 responses were received and 15 responses were discarded due to data missing or reliability judgement, leaving 315 valid responses for further data analysis. Exploratory factor analysis was performed employing SPSS 25. 0. The KMO and Bartlett sphere test results were good, then the principal component analysis was used to extract the factors whose characteristic roots were greater than 1. The results showed that all the items of BDC were aggregated into 3 factors, and the cumulative variance explanation rate reached 76. 548%;all the items in SCCI were aggregated into 2 factors, and the cumulative variance explanation rate reached 83. 757 %;all items of the EOP were aggregated into one factor, and the variance explanation rate was 77. 530%, which is consistent with the dimensions of the scale designed in this study, indicating that the quality of the questionnaire data was good. This was followed by reliability test and validity test and all the test results were satisfying. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used for the data analysis employing Amos 24. The test results show: χ2 / df =1. 823<3, RMSEA =0. 062<0. 08, CFI = 0. 953>0. 9, NFI = 0. 903>0. 9, TLI = 0. 947>0. 9. All ndicators are within the acceptable range, indicating that the model fits well with the sample data. The results of path analysis show that BDRI has a significant impact on both BI and GI;the BDIDA does not reach the significance level for the path of BI and GI;the BDA has a positive effect on BI and GI respectively;the BI and GI have a positive effect on EOP respectively. Following this, the mediating role of SCCI was tested by Bootstrap. The test results show that BI does not play a mediating role between BDC and EOP;however, GI does play a mediating role between BDC and EOP. The conclusions are drawn as follows by the empirical study. Firstly, BDC can positively promote SCCI;Secondly, SCCI can positively affect EOP;Thirdly, SCCI plays a mediating role between BDC and EOP. Theoretically, this research reveals that intermediary effect of SCCI as a complementary asset between BDC and EOP, which enriches literature by adding mechanism of other influencing factors on the path of BDC positively affecting EOP. Practically, this study has clarified a specific transmission path for BDC to improve EOP, i. e., enterprises should vigorously cultivate big data to improve their EOP, meanwhile focus more on the intermediary effect of SCCI © 2023, Journal of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. All Rights Reserved.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The coronavirus (COVID-19) has had a tremendous impact on companies worldwide. However, researchers have no clear idea of the key issues requiring their attention. This paper aims to close this gap by analysing all business-related posts on a coronavirus subreddit ("r/coronavirus") and identifying the main research streams that are guiding the research agenda for a post-coronavirus world. Design/methodology/approach: We use data from reddit, particularly the subreddit "r/coronavirus" to identify posts that reveal the impact of coronavirus on business. Our dataset has more than 200,000 posts. We used an artificial intelligence-based algorithm to scrape the data with business-related search terms, clean it and analyse the discussion topics. Findings: We show the key topics that address the impact of coronavirus on business, combining them into four themes: essential service provision, bricolage service innovation, responsible shopping practices and market shaping amid crisis. We discuss these themes and use them to develop a service research agenda. The results are reported against the backdrop of service research priorities. Originality/value: The study identifies four key themes that have emerged from the impact of coronavirus on business and that require scholarly attention. Our findings can guide service research with unique insights provided immediately after the coronavirus outbreak to conduct research that matters to business and helps people in vulnerable positions in a post-coronavirus world. ABSTRACT

This paper aims to analyze the opportunities of fintech in the face of the economic crisis generated by COVID-19, which has had a great impact on companies and on the lives of people who have been forced to reinvent their work, consumption habits and their interaction with the environment in order to sustain themselves in an increasingly competitive market that affect their lifestyle. It is es-sential to bear in mind that the traditional system and the government have made efforts to main-tain the country's economic stability, but the results have not been very satisfactory. Therefore, a triangular-type exploratory research is carried out from the qualitative and quantitative aspects, through the application of information collection instruments, identifying financial, organizational and strategic of the SMEs in the city of Bogota, that reported their financial statements with cutoff to December 2021 to the Superintendency of Corporations. Finally, it is evident the opportunity for fintech to do disruptive technological innovation for the development of financial products through connectivity from mobile devices for personal use that allow monitoring, electronic commerce, transaction systems, financing, decision-making models and optimization of financial processes at a low cost, which makes it possible to open a range of multiple opportunities for SMEs that seek greater participation and competitiveness where they can offer their products and services in an efficient, agile, comfortable and reliable way.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 pandemic brought up issues with healthcare costs, national economic development and welfare of the society in forefront. Nations across the globe followed different approaches to deal with COVID-19, such as zero tolerance, herd immunity, containment to build treatment capability. National healthcare became a contentious sociopolitical issue involving healthcare costs, technologies and societal health. In the United States even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government approach was pursuing a sustainable improvement in patient care through adoption of medical and information technologies. The national healthcare policies are framed around technological interventions with the assumption that deployment of technologies could keep healthcare costs under control and at the same time improve health outcomes. However, evidences show that the healthcare costs are in the rise even with impressive progress in technological deployment. This article highlights some of the recent trends in healthcare costs, technological preparedness, medical technology developments in managing COVID-19 pandemic. The US government mandated electronic health record (EHR) systems implementation and assess its impact on healthcare costs and health outcomes. This article emphasizes the need for understanding the interconnectedness of costs, technology and societal health.
